How Can Psychodynamic Therapy Help Anxiety, Panic, and Depression?

Psychodynamic therapy, also called insight-oriented therapy, is a type of talk therapy that helps you understand the deeper reasons behind emotional struggles. Instead of focusing only on reducing symptoms, this approach looks at why anxiety, panic attacks, or depression keep showing up in your life.

Anxiety and panic attacks can feel sudden and overwhelming — a racing heart, shortness of breath, dizziness, or a sense of losing control. Depression often feels different: heavy, draining, and discouraging. You might struggle with low motivation, self-doubt, hopelessness, or a loss of interest in things you used to enjoy. While these experiences feel painful and confusing, they are rarely random.

Psychodynamic therapy is based on the idea that much of our emotional life happens outside of our awareness. Past experiences, especially in important relationships, can shape how we respond to stress today. Sometimes we develop patterns — like people-pleasing, withdrawing, overworking, perfectionism, or choosing similar types of partners — as ways to cope with difficult feelings. These patterns often begin as attempts to deal with an internal conflict, but over time they can create more anxiety or deepen depression.

In therapy, we slow down and look at these patterns together. As you begin to understand the deeper roots of your anxiety or depression, the symptoms often start to feel less overwhelming. Panic becomes less mysterious. Depression becomes more understandable. When you can see the pattern clearly, you’re no longer stuck repeating it automatically.

The goal isn’t just insight for its own sake — it’s real change. As old conflicts are worked through, you gain more freedom to respond to life in healthier, more intentional ways.

If you’re struggling with anxiety, panic, or depression, therapy can offer a supportive space to better understand what’s happening beneath the surface and begin moving toward lasting relief.
